I was pleased to see your announcement last night that the combat
mission in Iraq is over. Although this is an important step, the war
will only end when the last U.S. soldier leaves the country, which is
scheduled to happen by Dec. 31, 2011.
I trust you will keep that pledge. But bringing peace to Iraq will
require more. It requires a relationship defined by dignity and justice
between our peoples.
We have a responsibility to care for our veterans wounded emotionally
and physically by the war. And we have a great responsibility to help
the people of Iraq to help themselves to heal, to rebuild, to return
home, and to forge their own future.
